The web's best industries

I'm working with Internet consultancy Harper James at the moment to produce a list of the UK's best industries online.

In order to build an extensive list, I'd love to consider people's thoughts on the best and worst of those online. We're all aware that certain industries - like the travel sector have been revolutionised by the advent of the net and many of these sites are designed and run in a very professional manner. But which areas are racing to catch up, which are just getting a foothold and which are still down right ugly?

I'll be working on this over the next few weeks and considering criteria including the look of a site, its navigation and search success amongst other things.

I wouldn't say they are racing to catch up, but the websites that belong to some of the big high street retail chains and well known brands are the most annoying sites.

I suppose as it's the fashion industry they are more bothered by the look of the site that the useability, but that is ludicrous. It's one thing to have a funky site but another if all it does is entertain and deter people from actually spending!

They all love to use flash, just look at www.diesel.com. As an Internet Marketeer I would advise against this normally. I think the only reason that such brands feel they can get away with sites like this is because SEO isn't paramount for them, they rely on brand recognition. Are they missing out though?

One shop that i think looks great, is easy to use and performs well online is www.topshop.co.uk.

You've raised some very good points there but the web isn't all about selling. Diesel is a strong fashion brand and sales are driven by people wanting to buy in to an image, they are likely to want to try on the clothes, experience the shop feel and massage their vanity in front of a mirror. Their website doesn't neccessarily need to sell clothes directly but simply evoke strong brand associations of style, funk and glamour, which is best created on the web by utilising flash technology. That said, I don't have the latest version of flash installed so I can't access their site at all :(
