I understand what Chris is saying about the power Google can potentially weild and I think the subject of web based email is an interesting one.

Most of us have a hotmail, yahoo or gmail account for personal mail. I've had hotmail for 6 years and when an introduction email came for gmail - I was pretty interested.

However, by the time I came round to doing it - gmail had turned into Googlemail in the UK and for some reason, it didn't sound quite as good. It's interesting that with these free services the factors that tip the balance can be very small indeed.

The idea that Google might advertise within my emails on relevant subjects and therefore 'know my business' was bearable when I might have had jonathan.bowers@gmail.com. The impetus was lost quickly when they changed the name.
